Why This Gear Matters

Sleeping bags are rated for survival, not comfort — add 10–15°F to the rating for actual comfort. Down is lighter and compresses smaller; synthetic insulates when wet. The bag is only half the bed: a foam pad, inflatable sleeping pad, or air mattress (plus a pump) keeps the ground from stealing heat. Mummy bags are efficient; rectangular bags offer room to move.

Spend smart. Spend money here if you camp in the cold. A cheap bag that is rated 20°F too low is a miserable night. For summer car camping, a $40 bag plus a decent pad is enough.

Buying FAQ

What do Good, Better, and Best mean?

Good (green) is the budget pick that works. Better (blue) is the value sweet spot. Best (purple) is premium when durability or comfort is worth it. Fancy (gold) is the extra — a Traxxas Sledge, a Switch 2, a huge power station. Fun, not required.
