First Overnight Backpacking Food: What I Carry
I pack bag dinners, no-cook lunch, and a Jetboil. I do not invent a gourmet menu on a first overnight.

Field notes — I write these in first person, from how I actually pack. Photos go in when I have them.
Photo slot — A Jetboil and two bag meals on a rock. I will drop a picture in when I have one that is not a stock shot.
Calories first. Theater later.
One bag dinner. Oats or a bar breakfast. Tortilla lunch. Nuts. I count boils on the canister. I do not pack a skillet ‘just in case’ on trip one.
I repackage at home so I am not carrying cardboard. A Jetboil or PocketRocket plus one pot is the kitchen.
Water is a filter, not a gallon jug
I treat water. I do not drink pretty creek water because it looks clean. Bear rules are local. I check before I hang a bag and call it done.

Quick answers
Is this a complete packing list?
No. This is what I actually do for this situation. Use a full checklist for the boring essentials, then add or subtract from this note.
