Field notes — I write these in first person, from how I actually pack. Photos go in when I have them.

Photo slot — 17-inch griddle and a Weber Go-Anywhere side by side on a picnic table. I will drop a picture in when I have one that is not a stock shot.

They are not the same tool

A griddle is a diner top. Eggs, smash burgers, fried rice, quesadillas. A suitcase grill is a grate: chicken, dogs, anything that wants smoke or grill marks.

I do not take a patio kettle or a cart grill and call it camping. If it does not leave room for the cooler, it stays home.

When I pick the griddle

Kids, breakfast, anything chopped. Cleanup is one scrape. I season it like cast iron before the first trip. I skip hooded listings that hide the price behind Buying Options.

When I pick the grill

I want fire flavor or I am in a park that allows charcoal. Weber Go-Anywhere charcoal is the suitcase I trust. Cuisinart Petite Gourmet or a Q1200 if I want gas and a real featured price. Charcoal is banned in some parks. I check.

Quick answers

Which should I buy first?

If I cook breakfast for a family, I buy the 17-inch griddle. If I mostly grill burgers and dogs, I buy a small gas or charcoal suitcase grill.
