What I Do Not Buy for a First Camping Trip
Skip the $300 pack, the patio griddle, and the heirloom chair. Borrow, then buy the Big Five.
Field notes — I write these in first person, from how I actually pack. Photos go in when I have them.
I do not buy a personality in aisle 12
First trip I want shelter, a bag, a pad, a headlamp, a way to eat, water, and a first aid kit. I do not need an ultralight tent, a Yeti chair, a 36-inch griddle, or a suitcase of titanium.
I borrow a tent if I can. I practice setup in the yard. I would rather look cheap than look miserable.
The upsells I walk past
Lanterns in five colors. A kitchen that nests into a city. A $90 chair I will cry over when it meets ketchup. Fancy fire starters when matches and a ferro rod already work.
After one trip I know what I actually reached for. That is when I spend.
Quick answers
Is this a complete packing list?
No. This is what I actually do for this situation. Use a full checklist for the boring essentials, then add or subtract from this note.
