Sleeping Bag Temperature Ratings: How I Read Them

The tag is not a promise I will be cozy
A 20°F bag is not a 20°F comfort bag for me. I add 10–15°F for how I actually sleep. Women and cold sleepers add more. Marketing copy will not save a night.
Down is lighter and hates being stored crushed. Synthetic is heavier and still works when it gets damp. Car camp: I can take the bulky bag.
The pad is half the system
Cold ground eats heat. I do not buy a better bag and sleep on a trash bag. A cheap foam pad beats pride.
